July Energy: What Does Freedom Mean When it’s an Inside Job?

July 01, 20263 min read

When I think of July, I think of freedom.

Not just the kind we celebrate with fireworks, beach days, long weekends, and warm summer nights, but the deeper kind. The kind that lives inside us.

As kids, we experienced a natural sense of freedom in riding bikes until the streetlights came on, playing wiffle ball with all the neighborhood kids, climbing trees, and cooling off at the beach or in a neighbor’s pool. We didn’t hold back or worry about limitations. We just lived.

But life gets fuller as we age. Responsibilities pile up. Heartbreak, disappointment, and old wounds shape the stories we tell ourselves. We begin to carry beliefs about what we deserve, what’s possible for us, and what we have to endure. Without even realizing it, we can become so identified with those stories that we forget we have the power to choose again.

To me, that is where freedom begins.

Not in escaping our circumstances, but in remembering our agency within them.

Freedom is the willingness to let go of the illusion that you are somehow powerless or simply at the mercy of life. It’s recognizing that while you may not control every situation, you always have a choice in how you meet it, how you move through it, and what you decide to carry forward.

You can choose to hold onto the past, or you can choose to release what no longer serves you.

You can choose forgiveness over resentment.

You can choose to keep repeating an old story, or you can choose to rewrite it.

You can choose to stay where you are, alter course, or step into something entirely new.

You can choose to listen to your inner voice, or continue to stifle it.

You can choose the well-worn path that feels familiar, or the road less traveled that calls to your soul.

Every choice carries a consequence. But avoiding choice is still a choice, and often it’s the one that keeps us stuck.

Real freedom asks us to take ownership of our lives. To stop holding onto the belief that we have to suffer through circumstances simply because they are familiar. To accept that our choices shape our experience and that, in claiming them, we step into greater clarity, responsibility, and ultimately, greater control over the life we are creating.

And maybe that’s why reconnecting with our inner child feels so important.

Because that younger part of us remembers what freedom felt like before fear took over. Before conditioning taught us who we should be. Before life convinced us to play small, stay safe, or settle.

That part of you still exists. The one who knew how to play, trust, dream, wander, laugh, and be fully present.

Maybe the invitation this month is to reconnect with that part of yourself. To remember what made your soul sing. To bring a little more wonder, joy, spontaneity, and possibility into your life.

Not by going backward, but by choosing, here and now, to move forward differently.

Because freedom isn’t something waiting for you outside of yourself.

It begins the moment you remember that you can choose, and choose again.

And maybe that’s the greatest freedom of all.

With warmth and gratitude,
Rebecca
